Austria's only world natural heritage site

Ancient beech forests have become quite a rarity in Europe. However, they still exist in the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area and in the Kalkalpen National Park : ancient, partly untouched beech forests worthy of protection with beech trees that are over 500 years old.

The two protected areas are Austria's first and only UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and thus part of a Europe-wide project to protect the last remaining primeval beech forests in Europe. These ancient forests with their diversity of habitats are a natural treasure. Primeval forest species such as the Alpine longhorn beetle and the white-backed woodpecker find a home here.
