New Year's Eve fireworks and firecrackers have a lasting impact on animals and the environment

New Year's Eve fireworks represent a stress factor for wild animals and the environment that is often underestimated. The loud bangs and bright flashes of light cause animals to panic, even at great distances. Wild animals flee uncontrollably, lose their sense of direction, or injure themselves. In the cold season, when energy reserves are already low, this stress can be life-threatening.

Sensitive protected areas such as the Kalkalpen National Park severely affected by fireworks. Disturbances in these refuges affect the natural behavior of wild animals and can have long-term effects.

In addition, New Year's Eve fireworks cause high levels of particulate matter pollution and leave large amounts of litter in the environment. Residues from plastic and chemical substances end up in soil and waterways, causing lasting damage to the environment.

Together with numerous nature conservation organizations, we appeal to everyone, especially those living near protected areas such as the Kalkalpen National Park , to refrain Kalkalpen National Park off fireworks and to toast the New Year 2026 in peace.
