Photo Exhibition by Julius Kramer
The European Lynx - Stories from the Wild
For over ten years, Julius Kramer has been setting up camera traps in the Bavarian Forest—on the trail of a silent returnee: the lynx.
The animals he documents live freely, in the wild—and are endangered. For although the lynx should be an integral part of our native wildlife, its return is not welcomed everywhere. Unfortunately, illegal killings are still a bitter reality.
Through his work, Julius Kramer aims not only to showcase the beauty of these animals but also to raise awareness—about their habitat, their behavior, and the threats they face every day.
Setting up camera traps requires patience, experience, and a keen sense of the animals’ behavior. It often takes weeks before a lynx makes an appearance. But when it does, we gain insights into a hidden world: solitary forays, playful cubs, silent encounters. It’s not just about photographing the lynx—it’s about making it visible where it would otherwise remain hidden.
Some of the photographs were also taken in the animal enclosures at the Bavarian Forest National Park. There, lynx can be observed up close—a valuable opportunity to document their behavior and expressions in detail.
In collaboration with the Luchs Bayern e.V. association, Kramer’s photographs not only contribute to research but also play an important role in environmental education and public outreach. Because once people get to know the lynx, they begin to protect it.
About the photographer
Julius Kramer has been a freelance nature photographer for many years. Having grown up in a village in Franconia, he developed a deep connection to nature at an early age. Today he lives in Munich and has been working for over ten years on a long-term project documenting lynx in the Bavarian Forest. His photographs reveal what usually remains hidden—and aim to inspire a love for the wonderful wilderness right on our doorstep and everywhere else in the world.
