One of the best-equipped environmental monitoring and research locations in Austria
The Federal Environment Agency has been carrying out environmental monitoring in the Kalkalpen National Park for more than 30 years and studying the forest ecosystem.
Today, Federal Environment Agency Managing Directors Hildegard Gitsch Aichberger and Verena Ehold and National Park Director Josef Forstinger signed a working agreement to continue the successful cooperation.

Thanks to its enormous wealth of data, the Zöbelboden site is also proving its worth as a field laboratory for important model calculations. For example, the researchers can analyze how changes in climate and extreme weather events affect a mountain forest ecosystem or how soil conditions can be better integrated into climate models. They can also derive recommendations for a climate-resilient forest that can cope with drought effects and forest disturbances.
