Training as a National Park Ranger

The certificate course to become an Austrian National Park Ranger, which was created in 2010, is the basis of a nationwide standardized training program. Participants in the course receive in-depth and comprehensive training on the objectives and tasks of a national park, as well as general information on the Austrian natural environment and its development. The basics of natural history as well as the diverse impact of humans on the landscape in the past and present are covered. The basics of nature interpretation and pedagogy for a particularly sustainable knowledge transfer are also taught. Legal principles and comprehensive training in emergency management round off the course.

The certificate courses are an educational measure in adult education regulated and recognized by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management by decree. The respective national park administrations and their institutions as well as the Hohe Tauern National Park Academy are responsible for conducting these courses as certified training centers. The certificate courses represent a basic course.

National park rangers are obliged to undergo further training. To this end, the individual national park administrations can design and hold in-depth modules, e.g. with primarily educational or more methodical content (e.g. wilderness education). Rangers can also acquire additional qualifications (e.g. boat guide, climbing guide).

The National Parks Austria Education Academy bundles the training and further education program of the national parks, which is open to all nature enthusiasts in addition to employees and rangers. The offer ranges from further education in the field of nature education, first aid courses and specialist conferences to exciting insights into the living world of various animal and plant species.
