Life Underwater - Research Tour

Exclusive tour with the national park researcher

Natural streams have become rare these days—they are often built over, straightened, or dammed. As a result, the streams have not only lost their natural dynamics, but many species that are dependent on this habitat have also disappeared. In Kalkalpen National Park , however, Kalkalpen National Park over 200 kilometers of free-flowing, natural mountain streams. These are home to crayfish, native brown trout, and other endangered species.

Christian Pichler-Scheder, aquatic ecologist at Kalkalpen National Park, shows on this exciting tour how food webs function in a mountain stream and how the national park ensures that native species can develop undisturbed by foreign competitors.
