What significance do biodiversity and protected areas have in climate change? Where are the effects already visible in the national park? Which animals and plants are among the losers or winners? On the way to the forest wilderness

We embark on an exciting search for the "primeval forest" of tomorrow: there are hardly any primeval forests left in Central Europe, the forest wilderness has been pushed back to tiny remnants. At Kalkalpen National Park , forests are developing largely without human intervention. Trees are allowed to grow old again and a natural diversity of species is established.

Nature conservation active

There are 21 alpine pastures and over 40 hay meadows at Kalkalpen National Park . The near-natural, traditional management promotes a high abundance of flowering plants, insects and birds.

As the former large herbivores such as the forest horse and aurochs no longer exist, large open areas would soon become wooded without human management. The mountain pastures must therefore be regularly grazed and cleared of woody plants. School or youth groups can actively help out with pruning shears and handsaws.
