Kalkalpen National Park Regional municipalities

The national park region basically comprises the area of all national park municipalities (§ 14 Upper Austrian National Park Act). In the national park declaration, the provincial government can define the national park region, taking into account natural contexts, at the request of the municipal council of the municipality concerned.

  • are limited to contiguous parts of one or more national park municipalities or
  • to municipalities or parts of municipalities that are not national park municipalities, provided that these municipalities commit themselves to special measures serving the establishment or operation of the national park.

The framework agreement "Kalkalpen National Park Region" serves as the basis for inclusion. Applications for inclusion in the National Park Region were submitted by ten municipalities:

Since 2007:

Since 2011:

In many respects, the Kalkalpen National Park region is a homogeneous, self-contained area

  • The natural and cultural landscape is similar, with the Upper Austrian Limestone Alps National Park at the heart of the region
  • As a rural economic area with a focus on agriculture and forestry, tourism and crafts, micro-enterprises and SMEs
  • Historically and culturally due to the shared heritage as the Upper Austrian Iron Road
  • As an evolved living space with strong valley areas with similar challenges. While the tourism industry plays an important role in the Windischgarstner Becken, the Steyrtal and Ennstal valleys are strongly characterized by agriculture and forestry. However, the region has great potential to bring the valley region closer together in terms of content and, above all, to strengthen the visibility and identification of the region to the outside world.
  • Organizationally with a long common regional development history and common orientation. There are numerous concepts such as: Regional development Steyr-Kirchdorf, local development strategy LEADER-Region Nationalpark Oö. Kalkalpen, tourism strategies and the like.
