Woodpeckers and other stealthy creatures
At the end of May, many pileated woodpeckers feed their young in the breeding cavities and are particularly active then. Black, gray, white-backed and three-toed woodpeckers also reveal their presence through calls and feeding traces. Mighty beech trees serve as a breeding ground for the black woodpecker and some of the next tenants use abandoned woodpecker cavities as nests. Spruce trees infested by the bark beetle attract three-toed woodpeckers. This tour offers insights into the current forest bird mapping in the national park around the Mayralm excursion area.
