Forest wilderness at Kalkalpen National Park with autumn-colored beech trees

The abandoned valley - from mining area to World Heritage Site

Come with us on an exciting journey through time. Time and again you come across traces of the past in the national park - remains of buildings, dilapidated tunnels, old ironwork. In Weißwasser, deep in the Hintergebirge mountains, there was a mining settlement where 1,000 people once lived. After a visit to the Unterlaussa miners' house, we head to the original sites of the mining settlement. Our hike then continues to the World Heritage areas. Here it becomes clear how quickly nature covers up human traces.
